IIndia, the largest democracy and the second-most populous country in the world is

known for its unique cultural, religious and ethnic diversities since long. Marked by the

presence of the world most popular religions such as Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Christianity, Buddhism

and Jainism, India has been a fertile ground for the germination of diverse social and religious lifestyles

and arts and artefacts emanating from each of these religions. India is also known for its more than 24

chief Indian languages, each spoken by a million or more people, and numerous other languages and

dialects. All these co-exist in this more than 5000 years of the old civilization. This book explores the various aspects of diversity in India.

The SCs (Dalits) have begun to use the educational and job reservations not only as a means to elevate themselves from their degraded social status but also to assert their rights as citizens of India. Due to the 15 percent job reservation guaranteed under the Indian Constitution, many Scheduled Caste persons have been able to get employment in various categories of government services. However, a significant number of posts still remain vacant.
