After a certain point in history, humankind was divided into specific categories based on their physical and geographical features which created a significant imbalance — adding permanent senseless caste structures into this worsened inequality. Of all the regions of India, Kerala (Southern India) had and have the most rigid and elaborate caste structure. This project is a protest against caste oppression and a celebration of togetherness.
As an introduction to caste-based inequality, I will be making a handmade photobook by taking inspiration from Juanan Requena and incorporating surreal digital manipulations, inspired by Jishnu Krishnan’s work, to introduce the significance of Parasinikadavu Temple in the society we live in. I will be expanding this project for the next module by experimenting with different techniques to enhance and enrich the vibrant photos and experience. To be in a place where everyone is equal is beyond words. One should experience it them self to wholly realise how unfair, how senseless these boundaries are. Art can both entertain and disturb. I am using art as a tool to call out on this inequality and to show a better world is possible.
As this is a handmade book, I am not expecting much of an expense, other than the photo printing costs. I am aiming to adapt cost-effective methods for this project, to use the rest of the money to travel back to Kerala to document more on this subject.
